Indian Senna Leaves, also referred to as Sonamukhi (Botanical name – Cassia angustifolia), is a leguminous herb cultivated extensively in the southern regions of India. Both its pods and leaves are utilized in Ayurvedic and modern medicinal practices. Senna leaves are primarily valued for their laxative properties.
Scientific studies on Senna have identified anthraquinones, sennosides, and various minor sennosides, all of which contribute to its laxative effects. These compounds work by gently relaxing the intestinal tissues, facilitating the movement of digested food through the intestines. Consequently, it aids in the elimination of vitiated and putrefied Pitta, providing relief from fever induced by excessive Pitta.
Moreover, Senna helps reduce ascites (fluid accumulation in the stomach layers) when used in conjunction with other medications. It also assists in eliminating toxins from the skin layer and intestines, while promoting the removal of excess phlegm from the lungs and alleviating cough intensity.
